Canberra: Day 5 [Feb. 8th, 2006|08:42 am]

It's been some time since I update my journal. I have been in Canberra since last saturday on this machine learning course which started the day before. It is a quiet town, even more quiet than Zurich over in Switzerland or even the most ulu place in Singapore. The shops closes very early, roughly 5 for all shopping stores on weekdays. On Sunday, it is even shorter. The lifestyle is slow as compared to Singapore. In any case, it is too quiet!!!!

I arrive with my colleague on Saturday and were stuck in Melbourne airport for 7 hours of transit. We could not get out of the airport as they would not want to check in our luggage for the domestic flight to Canberra till 3 hours before departure. In the end, we were stuck in the airport with our luggage and we practically window-shopped the whole airport. We were sleepy and yet we din have chance or dare to take a nap in case our belongings were taken during our nap.

Cutting the dumb stupid details in between, there is actually some fastfood that resembles those in Singapore. Hungry Jacks totally looks like Burger King in disguise!!! The menu and every other thing all looks the same!!! There is also this food store call Ali Baba, very funny name haha, which sells pitas, lebanese food wraps. On our first day, we were kind of like wow, everything is expensive!!! Food here costs roughly from a minimum of 4 plus ( for those cheap lousy food, hmmm salads which dun even fill any portion of my stomach) to over 10 plus for those food chains outside. An A4 plus means over S$5 dollars!!! I could eat Ya Kun for my dinner and fill so full after that. Here, it is totally different, I need to spend A5 and above to get my stomach probably 70% full.

Next, the transportation over in Aus is very very very slow. I guess part of this is due to the fact that EVERYONE HAS A CAR!!! Kaoz, to own a car here is sooooo cheap. I heard from some of the locals (from Singapore) that they could buy 2 -3 cars with the amount paid over in Singapore. No wonder the transport system is so slow. There is not much commuters in the morning even when it is peak hours( if there ever was, cos everyone dun seem to be rushing for anything). In addition, people walk, cycle or even jog around Canberrra. The weather is cooling in the morning though way too cooling at times.

Opps, got to go, classes start now
